My, how time flies! I can’t believe we are already in April! Now, when I go to the woods, I can hardly see as everything is leafing out. Deer season is over, as well as raccoon, here anyway. This is the time of year I enjoy taking the dogs out to run rabbits! I don’t care how many times I hear it, the sound of my dogs pursuit yip while they are hot on a long legged jack rabbit still gives me a charge! I have been taking out all of my dogs, mostly either alone, or in groups of twos, and coursing the Christmas tree fields. I take along my single shot 20 gauge, but rarely get a shot. It is hard to get a shot while they are running through the trees, but it is fun for me and the dogs alike. I hadn’t taken Taz out for a few days, so I figured I would take him out alone yesterday. While we were out, I bumped into Dad and Sunny! I took the dogs, and he went a ways through the field and waited where he could see an opening. I came through with the dogs, and it worked perfectly! I heard Taz yipping, and Sunny flew into sight to join the chase. I caught a glimpse of the rabbit as it went by, too far for me to shoot, but heading right for Dad. |

Well, there’s a reason why it’s called “hunting” instead
of “killing”. It looked perfect, but the old rabbit didn’t cooperate…he
went the wrong way, and Dad didn’t get a shot either. We had some excitement,
and the dogs got a good run! We loaded them into Dad’s truck, and he gave
Taz and I a ride back to my truck. I love the versatility…I can hunt everything
from birds to coons to squirrels to rabbits, all with the same kind of
dog! Seems like whatever you’re hunting, they adapt! Enjoy the articles!
