Hunting Deer With Decker Hunting Terriers

Danielle Atencio Kupfer's dogs hunting

A Decker Hunting Terrier is an extremely versatile hunting breed, but hunting deer is probably their forte! A Decker will use its nose to locate and jump deer that are in thick cover and run the deer for a short distance. Many of them will open up, or give a pursuit yip, while they are chasing, so you know when they are on one and can get ready. One of the best qualities of a Decker while hunting deer is that they only run them a short distance, maybe 200 yards, and then turn back and check in with you, so you don’t spend the day hunting for your dog when you should be hunting deer. They have a good nose and can blood trail a wounded deer for you as well. They are a great companion for archers, as they can help find a deer if the blood trail dries up, so less deer are lost. In those states where it is legal, a Decker Hunting Terrier is a deer hunter’s best friend!
